Curio Bay

On Thursday, we drove from Invercargill to Curio Bay a short distance to the east along the south coast. The main attraction here is a petrified forest: a forest that was fossilised long ago as a result of a volcanic erruption that buried the trees with volcanic mud. It was quite amazing to see some of the fossils:


We discovered that the beach was also inhabited by rare yellow eyed penguins. There were signs on the way down to the beach telling us not to get too close to the penguins or they might flee back into the sea and neglect their young. Here is a picture of some idiot tourists ignoring those instructions and crowding round a penguin:
